INTERNSHIPS

Thank you for your interest in interning with Spero! Internships are voluntary and unpaid* but can accommodate academic requirements. Internships are available during spring, summer, and fall terms and include the following program areas:

  • Citizenship

  • Employment Support

  • English Language Learning (ELL)

  • Student Support

*We are honored to be a nonprofit host for the Inasmuch Community Fellowship. Interns who are Inasmuch Community Fellows may receive compensation for summer internships. This compensation is not available for spring or fall internships and is paid directly by Inasmuch not Spero.

General Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older

  • Be flexible and self-motivated

  • Provide a valid driver license and auto insurance


CITIZENSHIP INTERN

Description
Citizenship Interns assist the Adult Education Specialist with citizenship-focused education, resources, and tangible support. They might help resettled neighbors with some or all of the following:   

  • Practicing for reading and writing tests

  • Memorizing civics questions and answers

  • Understanding the naturalization application (Form N-400)

  • Interviewing in English

  • Scheduling appointments with immigration attorneys

Schedule/Hours

  • Flexible schedule, typically Monday to Friday

  • Must be available for at least 6 hours per week

Additional Requirements

  • Have strong interpersonal, organizational, and tutoring skills


EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT INTERN

Description

Employment Support Interns assist the Employment Support Specialist with establishing and maintaining relationships with local employers, connecting neighbors to these employers, and supporting both parties for the duration of employment. They might help resettled neighbors with some or all of the following:  

  • Filling out applications

  • Meeting with potential employers

  • Gathering information from neighbors

  • Occasional transportation

  • Researching specific fields based on the desires of individuals in the community

  • Working alongside other employment support staff to solve workplace issues

Schedule/Hours

  • Flexible schedule

  • 10-15 hours per week


ELL INTERN

Description

ELL Interns assist the Adult Education Specialist with ELL-focused education, resources, and tangible support. They might help resettled neighbors with some or all of the following: 

  • Teaching ELL classes

  • Assisting with ELL classes

  • Tutoring individuals

  • Planning lessons

  • Coordinating field trips to practice English around OKC

Schedule/Hours

  • Flexible schedule, typically Monday to Friday

  • Must be available for at least 6 hours per week

Additional Requirements

  • Must be pursuing practicum hours for academic or professional credentials in TESOL, TESL, TEFL, or related fields OR be pursuing additional teaching experience upon completion of at least a certification or minor in TESOL, TESL, TEFL, or related fields

  • Have strong interpersonal, organizational, and teaching skills


STUDENT SUPPORT INTERN

Duties/Description

The Student Support Intern will provide support to school-aged students in the resettled community by assisting with homework help, program facilitation, and other related needs. During the summer, this internship will assist with our Summer Program sessions for school-aged children by facilitating games and other educational activities.

Schedule/Hours

Flexible hours, Monday to Friday
