Speaking up for the fatherless

The Spero Project - Tuesday, May 11, 2010
In Oklahoma, there are over 9500 children in foster care, but only 1300 homes approved to receive these children and young adults. In America, there are a shocking 120,000 kids in the foster care system waiting to be adopted.

May is National Foster Care Awareness Month, and we want to invite you to get involved in your city and state. How can you serve the fatherless, orphaned, and suffering in our nation?

Here are some suggestions to getting involved in Oklahoma City specifically:
- Attend an Avenue Class at Spero, where you can hear from individuals directly working with this issue in our city, and how you can join them. The next Avenue Class will be May 25, 2010 at 7pm at the Spero offices.
- Pray with us! On May 17 at 7pm, Spero is joining with Cornerstone to hold a prayer vigil for the foster care system, children, and parents in our state and nation. Join us at Skyline Church in the SandRidge Auditorium.
- Open up your open to a foster child, or considering volunteering with or donating to Christian Services of Oklahoma and their work in our community.

Other ways we can get involved around the nation:
- Pray. In Luke 18:7-8 the Lord says, "So don't you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly!" We can choose to be one of those praying day and night for the foster children around our nation. Pray for the children as they go to school, develop friendships, mature emotionally, and graduate into adulthood. Pray for their futures! Pray also for the foster care homes, individuals working in the system on behalf of the children, and the biological families.
- Raise awareness in your community. What work is already being done? Let other people know and encourage those around you to find their place in this fight for the fatherless and orphaned!

"Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked."  Psalm 82:3-4
