Volunteer with Spero:Voice
Homework Helpers
Come see what you can remember from school by helping out a child who needs it. Every
Monday through Wednesday from 5pm to 6pm we offer time to help little minds grow.
Scholarship Search/ College Planning
Coming from interrupted educational backgrounds, refugee teens face the enormous challenge of learning English and maintaining their GPA in a still-very-new-language all at the same time. It takes a lot of effort for them to keep the pace, but we are happy to report that most do a fantastic job of trying hard at it. We want to reward their efforts and show we care by helping them tap into the resources available to them. Sign up to meet with a refugee teen once a week to discuss college possibilities and seek out scholarships on the web.
This volunteer role may be planned to fit your schedule provided you are able to commit to the same meeting time each week once scheduled.
Mentoring
Meet with a refugee once a week and become their friend in this new place. Teach them basic life skills such as the difference between certain items in the grocery store (because the salt and sugar look a lot alike), counting change, conversational English, try out each other’s favorite recipes, teach the basics of navigating the web, show them the scenery around their city, and/ or other various activities.
This volunteer role may be planned to fit your schedule provided
you are able to commit to the same meeting time each week once scheduled.
Choir/ Music
Our Ministry Partners, Creative Intention, offer opportunities to use your musical abilities and time to train up refugee youth. You can teach beginner music classes, one-on-one or group, and seasonally you could participate in shaping a children’s choir.
Please contact paul@thesperoproject.com if you are interested in assisting with Creative Intention.
Summer Program
We offer a six-week recreational/ educational program to prepare refugee children for the upcoming school year, practicing drills and games to instill concepts for them. Housed within this is a leadership program for older kids to help set-up & tear down and assist with the younger kids. There is plenty of opportunity to take part! For Summer 2010, the summer program will run from
June 22nd- July 29th on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings.
Social Events
Around major holidays, we plan events (picnic in the park, dinners, etc.) to celebrate together and introduce the meaning of our festivities to the refugee community. We can always use help setting up for an event or just come and take part in the relational aspect. Check back here when a holiday is approaching and we'll have the information posted if we'll be hosting a correlating Special Event.
If you would like to volunteer with Spero:Voice through any of these programs or events, please attend our Voice Avenue Class, designed to give a broad overview of the refugee situation and help individuals or groups take the next step to get involved. Check our calendar to find out when the next Avenue Class will be held!
If you plan to attend the next Avenue Class, please sign up below. We'll contact you if there are any changes!
Please note that all volunteers with Spero:Voice are required to have a background check through OSBI for $19. We appreciate any donations to help with these fees! If you are interested in donating all or a portion of your background check, simply click
here. Make a note under "Special Instructions" that you'd like this donation to go to your background check. Thank you!
